The Green Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America is honored to have a presence at 163rd Vermont State Fair in Rutland, VT. Throughout the State Fair, the Green Mountain Council will have a booth where visitors will be able to learn more about Scouting. On September 6th, Governor’s Day, Boy Scouts will play a role escorting dignitaries at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police show and around the fair grounds.
The Boy Scouts of America is the nation’s premier youth-serving organization. In Vermont there are more than 6,500 youth participating in Cub Scouts, for boys in first to fifth grade, Boy Scouts for boys aged 11 to 18 and Venturing for girls and boys aged 14-20. The Boy Scouts instill character in youth, providing citizenship training and aims to increase the physical fitness of all our young people.
At 1:00pm on Saturday, September 6th, Governor Jim Douglas, Rutland’s Mayor Chris Louras, Jason Gibbs and State Fair President Richard Rivers will be escorted to their seats by four of Vermont’s Eagle Scouts just before the Royal Canadian Mounted Police begin their thrilling display of horsemanship and discipline. Eagle Scouts will also accompany a group of senior citizens to their seats.
At 2:15 Jason Gibbs, Governor Douglas’s Press Secretary and Eagle Scout from Brandon will accept a special gift from the RCMP on behalf of all the Boy Scouts in the State of Vermont. Charlie Kelton, a Vermont State Fair Trustee said, “The Vermont State Fair is excited that the Green Mountain Council will receive this gift in 2008 and we hope to continue our relationship with the Boy Scouts.”
Following the performance Eagle Scouts will provide a tour to the dignitaries ensuring they see the entire Fair.
Not only will the Boy Scouts be out in full force on September 6th, they are also sponsoring a display next to the Maple Sugar House where many interactive activities will be offered. There will be a compass course for youth and adults to participate in, videos about Scouting, an opportunity to find out when your local area will hold membership recruitment and other exciting activities for families to participate in. The Green Mountain Council hopes everyone will stop by, even if it is just to say "hi" and find out about Scouting in your local community.
2008 begins what both the VT State Fair and Green Mountain Council hope to be a long-lasting partnership. The Boy Scouts will be able to deliver State Fair brochures to many families in Vermont that would not necessarily know about the Fair, and the Green Mountain Council will be able to showcase their record of achievement and service.
Come by the Green Mountain Council’s booth and find out what Scouting is all about. We hope to see you there!
