For Laurie, Scouting has always been a family affair. She came to the movement through her father, William Sweetser — an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster, and Silver Beaver recipient who was named the Green Mountain Council’s “Lamoille County Citizen of the Year” in 2008. That spirit of service carried into the next generation: her son Jeremy earned his Eagle Scout with Troop 876 in Morrisville and has himself worked for the Green Mountain Council, and her daughter Miranda has also held roles in GMC and other councils. The Sneed name has been woven through Vermont Scouting for a long time, and Laurie has been at the center of it.  Over nearly three decades, Laurie grew through the heart of our operation. She began as an Accounting Specialist and went on to succeed Mary Lou Santin as Office Manager, becoming the steady hand and institutional memory that kept the Waterbury Service Center running day in and day out. Across her tenure, Laurie’s service has spanned five Scout Executives — a continuity that speaks volumes about her steadiness and the trust she earned over the years.
But anyone who knows Laurie knows her impact reaches far beyond any job title. As Staff Advisor to the Popcorn Sale, she has helped generations of Scouts raise the funds that make the adventure possible. She has led our Trading Post operations at both the Waterbury Service Center and our summer camps — and as the undisputed Patch Maven of Waterbury, she has helped design and bring to life thousands of event patches across her career, small treasures that Scouts will carry for a lifetime. For decades she also served as Staff Advisor to the Haunted Harvest at Camp Sunrise, introducing the wonder of the outdoor program to countless Cub Scout families. Through all of it, what Scouters will remember most is Laurie herself: her warmth, her care for every person who walked through our doors, and the quiet reliability that made her the backbone of this Council. She never sought the spotlight, but our Scouting community in Vermont is stronger, warmer, and more welcoming because of her. In retirement, Laurie and her husband Danny look forward to spending more time with their family, splitting their time between Alabama and Stowe. We could not be happier for them — even as we know how deeply she will be missed around the Service Center. |
