Webelos Woods introduces Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts to camping, outdoor skills, and the excitement of Scouts BSA. Each June, Scouts, leaders, and parents gather at Mt. Norris Scout Reservation for a weekend of adventure.
Throughout the event, Scouts learn by doing. They practice new skills, complete hands-on challenges, and experience parts of the Scouts BSA program. At the same time, families meet other members of the Scouting community and become more comfortable with outdoor camping.
Most importantly, Webelos Woods helps Scouts prepare for the next stage of their Scouting journey.
An Adventure for Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts
Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts follow programs that match their ages and experience levels. Therefore, each group can develop the skills it needs while still enjoying activities together.
Webelos Scouts focus on camping basics, outdoor confidence, and teamwork. Meanwhile, Arrow of Light Scouts take on greater responsibility and explore skills that prepare them for a Scouts BSA troop.
Additionally, Scouts BSA members help lead activity stations and games. As a result, younger Scouts can learn directly from experienced youth leaders and see the patrol method in action.
Choose a One-Night or Two-Night Experience
Families may camp for one night or stay for the entire weekend. This flexibility allows each den to choose an experience that matches its readiness and schedule.
The weekend begins on Friday evening as participants arrive and set up their campsites. Afterward, Scouts and families may gather for a cracker barrel, karaoke, or another welcoming activity.
On Saturday morning, an opening ceremony launches a full day of activities. Then, Scouts rotate through program stations, explore Mt. Norris, and spend time with their dens.
Finally, an evening campfire brings everyone together for songs, skits, stories, and Scouting fellowship. On Sunday, the weekend concludes with a Scouts’ Own service and checkout.
When interest and conditions allow, participants may also join a three-mile hike on Mt. Norris.
Explore Webelos Woods Activities
Activities vary according to staffing, weather, and available facilities. Nevertheless, each program gives Scouts opportunities to explore, learn, complete advancement and have fun.
Program stations may include:
- First aid and emergency preparedness
- Fire building and outdoor safety
- Knots and other Scout skills
- Archery and BB target activities
- Indoor or outdoor climbing
- Fishing at Lake Eden
- Gaga ball and field games
- Camping and equipment skills
- Team-building challenges
- Crafts and tie-dye activities
- Campfire songs, skits, and stories
Practice Patrol-Style Camping
Camping plays an important role in the Webelos Woods experience. Instead of watching adults complete every task, Scouts take an active role in setting up camp and caring for their site.
To begin, each den brings its camping equipment and selects an appropriate tenting site in their designated campsite. Next, Scouts help pitch tents, organize gear, and prepare their sleeping areas.
During the weekend, dens also practice working together and sharing responsibilities. For instance, Scouts may help prepare meals, clean equipment, organize supplies, or complete campsite chores.
Experienced leaders remain available to offer guidance. However, they encourage Scouts to solve problems, make decisions, and grow more independent.
Through this approach, Scouts build confidence before joining a Scouts BSA troop.
Cook and Eat Together
Saturday lunch is included in the event program, while dens plan and prepare their other meals.
This arrangement gives Scouts an opportunity to practice outdoor cooking and meal preparation. Furthermore, cooking together helps dens strengthen teamwork and learn how each person contributes to camp life.
Before arriving, leaders should create a simple menu, assign responsibilities, and review food-safety practices. They should also identify allergies and dietary needs during registration.
Who Can Attend?
Webelos Woods welcomes Scouts who enter the Webelos or Arrow of Light program in the fall (Rising 4th or 5th graders). Parents, guardians, den leaders, and other registered adult leaders may also attend.
Because the event supports family participation, adults can learn alongside their Scouts. In addition, leaders can gain ideas for future den outings and discover ways to prepare Scouts for troop camping.
Prepare for the Weekend
Each participant should bring clothing, personal items, and camping gear that match the current packing list. Units should also bring required health forms and follow all registration instructions.
Because Vermont weather can change quickly, families should pack layers, rain protection, sturdy footwear, and extra dry clothing. Likewise, each Scout should bring a sleeping bag and sleeping pad suitable for the expected conditions.
