Volunteer Opportunities

Adult role models create valuable learning experiences for young people in Scouting. Because every volunteer brings different skills and experiences, each adult has something meaningful to contribute.

However, the benefits of Scouting extend beyond youth. Through training and hands-on experience, adult volunteers also strengthen their leadership, communication, outdoor, and physical skills. At the same time, they learn new ideas and build relationships with others in their communities.

Although volunteers give significant time to support Scouting, many believe the experience helps them become:

  • A better citizen
  • A better parent
  • A better manager
  • A better employee
  • More patient and tolerant of others
  • More open to new ideas and opinions

Most importantly, Scouts need adults who can provide direction, coaching, and encouragement. By volunteering, you can help today’s youth develop the skills and confidence they need to become tomorrow’s leaders.

Merit Badge Counselors

Becoming a Merit Badge Counselor is a meaningful way to share your knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm with Scouts while making a real difference in their growth. Whether your expertise comes from a career, hobby, or lifelong interest, you can help Scouts explore new subjects, develop practical skills, and discover interests that may shape their future.

Merit Badge Counseling is also a flexible way to volunteer. You can focus on the subjects you know best and work with Scouts as opportunities arise, making it easier to contribute even with a busy schedule. Along the way, you will meet motivated young people, support their progress toward advancement, and help them build confidence through hands-on learning.

Most importantly, Merit Badge Counselors provide positive adult mentorship. By sharing your skills and encouraging Scouts to challenge themselves, you help create memorable experiences while strengthening Scouting programs throughout the Green Mountain Council.
