Passing of Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Byrne, NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout

Dear Vermont Scouting Community – It is with great sadness that I share the passing of Dr. Bernard “Bernie” F. Byrne of Northfield, Vermont, on July 16 at the age of 82.
Bernie was a proud Eagle Scout who remained dedicated to the Scouting movement throughout his life. He was recently honored with the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Outstanding Eagle Scout Award — one of the highest recognitions an Eagle Scout can receive. Beyond Scouting, he was an accomplished civil engineer and computer scientist, a professor at Vermont State University, and a longtime transportation engineer with Dubois and King.
Bernie’s family has graciously invited active Scouts and leaders to attend the funeral service. If you are able to participate, please plan to be at:
Norwich University Chapel Monday, July 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery
Visiting hours are Sunday, July 26 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Avenue, Northfield.
I want to thank Paul Milne for stepping up to coordinate a Scout Color Guard for the service.
