Spend Your Summer Outdoors

Trade the usual summer routine for fresh air, outdoor adventure, and life at Mt. Norris Scout Reservation in Eden, Vermont.

Camp staff members help deliver exciting programs for Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA. Depending on your position, you may teach outdoor skills, lead games, support waterfront activities, assist with shooting sports, work in ecology and conservation, help prepare meals, maintain camp facilities, or contribute to another important part of the camp experience.

Not every role requires years of Scouting experience. Successful staff members bring a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to helping others.

Mt. Norris needs people with different interests, talents, and experience levels. Camp staff opportunities may include positions in areas such as:

• Aquatics
• Climbing
• Ecology and conservation

Some positions require specific ages, certifications, or prior experience. However, training and support help staff members prepare for their responsibilities.

You do not need to be the loudest or most experienced person in the group. Great staff members listen, encourage others, follow through on their responsibilities, and help create a welcoming camp community.

Camp Staff Age Requirements

Opportunities are available for several age groups:

Age 15

Applicants who are age 15 by June 15 may serve at Mt. Norris in a volunteer counselor-in-training position. The counselor-in-training program introduces participants to camp operations, teamwork, and staff responsibilities while helping them prepare for future paid positions.

Age 16 and Older

Applicants who are at least age 16 by June 15 may qualify for paid camp staff positions. Available assignments depend on experience, program needs, and position requirements.

Age 18 and Older

Applicants who are at least age 18 may qualify for additional leadership and specialized program positions. Some roles may require certifications or relevant experience.

Age 21 and Older

Certain department director and senior leadership positions require applicants to be at least age 21.

Additional Requirements

All paid and volunteer summer camp staff members must meet current Scouting America membership, training, and employment requirements.

What You Can Expect

Camp life is active, rewarding, and different from a typical job. Staff members work together to prepare program areas, teach activities, solve problems, support campers, and keep camp operating safely.

Some days are challenging. Plans may change, weather may affect activities, and campers may need extra encouragement. Nevertheless, those moments help you become more adaptable, capable, and confident.

You can also expect plenty of memorable experiences. Staff traditions, campfires, shared accomplishments, and friendships often become some of the most meaningful parts of the summer.

Living and working closely with other motivated young adults creates a strong sense of community. You meet people from different towns, schools, backgrounds, and Scouting experiences. Together, you share responsibilities, celebrate successes, and support one another through demanding days.

By the end of the summer, your coworkers are more than names on a staff roster. They become teammates, mentors, references, and lifelong friends.
