Ski & Ride
Experience winter in Vermont during a Green Mountain Council Ski and Snowboard Weekend. These events bring Scouts, leaders, and families together for outdoor adventure, personal growth, and time on the mountain.
Whether you already ski advanced terrain or want to try a winter sport, the weekend offers a flexible Scouting experience. Participants can choose skiing, snowboarding, or a non-skier package when available. As a result, units can include members with different interests and experience levels.
A Green Mountain Council Tradition
For many years, Green Mountain Council has offered affordable ski and snowboard programs at Vermont resorts. Past events have included weekends at Okemo Mountain and Killington Resort.
Although locations and packages may change, the goal remains the same. The program helps Scouts experience Vermont’s mountains while building confidence, skills, and friendships.
More recently, the Council has hosted weekends at Killington Resort, with lodging in nearby Woodstock. Participants traveled from the lodging facility to the mountain each day. Therefore, units could enjoy two days on the slopes without arranging separate overnight accommodations.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Participants can spend Saturday and Sunday exploring terrain that matches their abilities. Experienced skiers and snowboarders can challenge themselves on more difficult trails. Meanwhile, newer participants can practice on beginner-friendly terrain.
Past packages have included two-day lift tickets, two nights of lodging, breakfasts, an event patch, and Snow Sports merit badge instruction. In addition, some events have offered single-day options or non-skier packages.
Rental equipment may also be available through the resort. However, participants usually arrange rentals and lessons separately. Families should review the current event information and reserve equipment or instruction early.
Snow Sports Merit Badge
Scouts have included access to Snow Sports merit badge counselors who teach them about winter safety, equipment, clothing, mountain responsibility, and skiing or snowboarding skills.
However, attending the weekend does not automatically complete every merit badge requirement. Scouts should review the current requirements before arriving and speak with the event counselor about any preparation they must complete.
Weekend Lodging and Meals
Past events have used school gymnasiums or similar facilities for overnight lodging. Participants should bring sleeping bags, ground pads, and other personal overnight gear.
These facilities have also provided separate sleeping areas, restrooms, and showers in accordance with Scouting America’s youth safeguarding standards.
Weekend packages typically included breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Units have arranged their own lunches and dinners or ordered meals from nearby restaurants. Because specific meal arrangements may change, leaders should review the latest registration guide before planning.
Who Should Attend?
Ski and Snowboard Weekends welcome participants with many experience levels. Units do not need to consist entirely of advanced skiers or snowboarders.
The event works well for:

- Beginners who want to explore a new winter activity
- Scouts working on the Snow Sports merit badge
- Units looking to strengthen their year-round outdoor programs

Prepare for the Mountain
Winter weather can change quickly, so participants should bring warm layers, waterproof outerwear, gloves, eye protection, and appropriate equipment.
Before leaving home, leaders should also review the weather, resort conditions, medical-form requirements, and event schedule. In addition, every unit should confirm its transportation and supervision plans.
Finally, participants should follow resort rules, the responsibility code for skiers and snowboarders, and all Scouting America safety policies.
